June 7-11

It is hard to believe that we are coming so close to the end of grade one.  The students have been using their calendar skills to count down the days until summer break.  Everyone has been doing such a great job with their learning and I love to see how engaged they continue to be.  We have continued to take advantage of the nice weather days to do gym outside which helps to offset the rainy ones.

We listened to the story of Okotok and Napi, and created a visual journal page of images from the story, to help us remember the important elements, so that it can be remembered and retold at a later date.

We have been reviewing a variety of mathematical skills, such as completing open-ended word problems while using manipulatives, reviewing counting with base ten blocks, specifically counting by tens and then adding on the ones as well as continuing with our addition and subtraction practice.

We listened to the story The Trip by Ezra Jack Keats, which is about a boy taking an imaginary trip back to his old neighborhood and remembering his friends.  Students planned and then created their own imaginary trips in their boxes.  It was amazing to see their building skills, creativity and imagination flourish through this science learning experience.  Then students wrote about their trip, remembering to use adjectives and mood to create interesting sentences to describe their work.

We started watching the movie Stuart Little as we had previously listened to the novel.  While watching we are looking for parts that are similar to the book and parts that deviate from the book for a future discussion about this story.

Finally, we completed our message art for the students who are leaving Tuscany and heading off on new adventures at their respective new schools.  We used our knowledge of visual patterns to create our letter in  an interesting way that used pencil colours and markers to stand out.  Stop by the school during the next two weeks and take a look around at the different and creative ways that we are saying goodbye to the older students and good luck on their new journey!
