April 19-23

We spent some time at the beginning of the week finishing up work that was started last week, while I was away, along with learning about Mental Health. We watched a couple of videos about mental health and emotions and figured it means dealing with our 'big emotions' so that we can stay healthy. With the help of Ms. Glowacki and Ms. Gainor, we created a short 1 minute film for the teachers to share with their classes to remind students to wear their hats on May 5th for Hat's on for Mental Health Day. I just need to get the link for the video and I will post it in the google classroom, as soon as that link is shared with me. Most likely that will be on Monday. Please watch for the note in the Show and Share book next week.
With Earth Day falling on April 22nd, we talked about what the Earth provides for us and what our responsibility is to care for our planet.  Students learned of a number of different actions that they can do to make a difference to our environment and each student chose an action and made a pledge to work on this action for the coming year. After looking at a globe and some pictures of the planet from space students created their own planet that resembled Earth. Ask your child how they made their piece of art and what their pledge was. We also got outside on Wednesday to do a little garbage clean up. Students were very surprised with the amount of garbage they collected in just 10 minutes.

We began our work with Sound Kreations this week and have enjoyed learning some moves.  We are working on making a dance to go with the hip hop song "The Three Pigs Rap".  We will be working towards mastering the dance next week and I will be filming the final performance so that we can share it with you at the end of our school wide dance unit.

We also started a variety of new literacy centres this week. Students are practicing reading long vowel words while playing Candy Land, buddy reading safely sitting side by side, creating a single sentence using interesting adjectives after brainstorming them for a single pictured noun that they chose as well as making words using a given set of letters and they are continuing to use the google classroom.
